Why choose us?

Free on-site consultation

Every project starts with a free consultation that runs about an hour on site, walking the property, talking through how you want to use it, and flagging structural or drainage issues early.

Family-owned firm

Botanical Concepts is family owned and operated by partners Denise Rosenbloom and Bianca Ellis, a deliberately small boutique practice where the designer you meet is the designer who sees the project through.

Over 20 years in Chicago

The partners have spent over 20 years designing and building outdoor space in Chicago, which means knowing how local clay drains and what survives on an exposed upper floor terrace.

Design and build in house

One contract covers the drawing, the digging and the planting, with design, hardscape, planting and rooftop construction handled by a single team rather than split across separate trades.

Rooftop deck specialists

Rooftop decks, garage-top decks, condo terraces and green roofs are handled in house, including structural assessment, stamped drawings, Department of Buildings permit filing and construction.

Award-winning landscapes

The firm has taken six consecutive Best of Chicago wins for Design and Build Landscape, alongside a 4.8 star Google rating from clients across the city.

FAQs

Do you charge for a consultation?
No. The first consultation is free and runs about an hour on site. We walk the property, talk through how you want to use the space, and flag anything structural or drainage related that will affect the budget.
What kind of work do you take on?
We design and build at grade and above it. That covers planting design, hardscape and paver patios, grading and drainage, irrigation, lighting and seasonal maintenance, plus rooftop decks, garage-top decks, condo terraces and green roofs.
Do you handle Chicago roof deck permits?
Yes. Structural assessment, stamped drawings, permit filing with the Chicago Department of Buildings and the construction itself are all handled in house. We work with licensed landscape architects and engineers where a project requires stamped drawings.
What areas do you work in?
We work throughout Chicago, and most of our projects are on the North and Near North Sides. Our office is in Lincoln Park. If you are outside that area, call us anyway, because if we can get material to the site we can usually help.
How does the process work?
There are four steps. A free consultation on site, then concept layout with planting plans and 3D renderings, then budget sign-off with real material samples and a line item budget, then build by our own crews. Nothing gets ordered until you approve it.
Can you produce drawings without doing the build?
Yes. We produce scaled, permit-ready landscape plans and coordinate with the City of Chicago, including parkway trees, public way permits and structural sign-off on rooftop work. If you need drawings before you need a contractor, we can start there.
Do you maintain the space after installation?
Yes. Seasonal maintenance is available if you want us to stay on after the build, and we have clients who have kept us on their gardens and terraces for well over a decade.
Who will I be working with?
Botanical Concepts is a deliberately small, boutique practice led by partners Denise Rosenbloom and Bianca Ellis. The designer you meet at the consultation is the designer who sees your project through to the final planting.
