Short Moves Inc is a family owned and operated moving company in St. Petersburg, Florida that has been in business since 1990, when George Burns completed the company's first job on February 23rd of that year. His son Steve Burns joined in 2010 and the Burns family still runs the business, which describes itself as a business built by repeat and referral customers. The crew handles local and in state moves plus loading and unloading work, and every truck arrives stocked with quilted moving pads, hand trucks and dollies, stretch wrap, furniture rubber bands, tie down rope and wardrobe boxes, with no fees charged for the use of that equipment. Moves are billed at an hourly rate with a one hour minimum, the clock starts when the crew arrives at the first pickup location, and the company never charges for drive time before or after the job and never asks for a deposit. Movers are full time employees who have passed a nationwide background check rather than subcontractors or day labor, some have been with the company more than 10 years, and Short Moves says it has never missed a scheduled move since 1990. Do you require a deposit to book a move?
No. Short Moves never requires a deposit and does not want any money from a customer until they are satisfied at the end of the move. The company points out that it has never missed a commitment, meaning it shows up for every scheduled move without needing a deposit up front.
What areas do you serve?
Short Moves stays within the state of Florida and serves local moves in Pinellas, Hillsborough, Manatee, Sarasota, Polk, Pasco, Hernando and Citrus counties. The company can service most moves statewide, but its pricing is set up to be most competitive for local moves in those counties.
How do I get an estimate?
The best way is to call. The team asks a series of questions about your move, which usually takes 5 to 20 minutes over the phone, and then decides whether anything needs to be looked at in person or whether the job can be estimated remotely. You can also submit the estimate form on the website or contact the office by email.
Do you charge for the time it takes your truck to reach me?
No. Short Moves never charges time for driving to or from the job location, before or after the move. The company runs crews across an eight county area every day, so trucks are already working in the areas it serves.
Are your movers subcontractors or day labor?
No. Every mover is a full time employee who has passed a nationwide background check and is covered under the company workers comp insurance. Because Short Moves does not overbook its schedule, it does not need to fill trucks with temporary workers or subcontractors.
What happens if something gets damaged during the move?
Short Moves offers to have a damaged piece repaired. If the item cannot be repaired, the company pays the customer up to the current market value for that item, with few limitations. The company states that it does not settle claims at pennies per pound and does not charge its employees for damages.
Do you charge more on weekends or busy days?
No. Rates are the same every day of the week, Monday through Saturday, and the same level of service is provided whether the move is on a Monday or a Saturday. Fridays, Saturdays and the end and beginning of the month do tend to book up about one to two weeks ahead.
How far in advance should I schedule my move?
Short Moves suggests scheduling about one to two weeks out. The schedule can fill up two weeks ahead during busy times such as the end of the month in summer, so booking earlier gives you more choice of dates.
