Hand wash (safe wash)
What many people don't realize about washing their vehicle is that oftentimes it's their process that's causing the most damage to their painted surfaces and the biggest reasons for swirl marks. I ensure to use the two bucket wash method. For those not familiar with what this is, the Two Bucket Wash involves having one bucket for your premium car shampoo and a second bucket filled with clean rinse water. Both buckets have either a Grit Guard or Dirt Lock at the bottom of the bucket, to act as a dirt filtering system.
Hand dry (safe dry)
Drying a vehicle with drying aid. Drying aids contain a cationic surfactant blend along with hydrophobic materials. Cationic surfactant blends attach the hydrophobic material to the car's surface, where it repels water and light debris such as dust, pollen and minor dirt. Drying aids break the surface tension on the vehicle, thus reducing the risk of scratching.
Clay bar paint decontamination
Clay bar decontamination is an important process to perform on your car if you want the condition of the paint to stay well. A clay bar for a car is made of a type of resin specifically designed to remove harmful particles and dirt from a vehicle's paint. Essentially, a clay bar takes off contaminants that a wash leaves behind. Some of the substances that clay bar removes in a car detail are metal or fiberglass.

While one works best with the other, polishes remain the work horse in the overall maintenance of the paintwork by removing aged paint, restoring depth and gloss and reducing or removing the appearance of surface defects such as surface scratches and the dreaded swirl mark. It also creates the ideal surface for a coat of wax.
