Specialized Moving Services
Specialized Moving Services is a family owned custom crating and specialty item company based at 2021 W. Bates Avenue in Englewood, Colorado. James and Peter Ray have owned and run the business since 1988, and the company describes itself as not a moving company: it handles the items and jobs ordinary movers leave behind. Work covers custom crating and fine art crating, export crating, machinery and equipment crating, vapor barrier packaging, container loading with blocking and bracing, custom skids and pallets, specialty item services such as pool tables, home gym equipment and grandfather clocks, TV mounting and furniture assembly, and claims inspection and documentation. Crates are built on-site at a home, warehouse, gallery or job site, or at the Englewood shop when the item can travel safely. Every technician is trained and background-checked rather than temporary labor, the company is fully insured with certificates of insurance available on request for commercial partners, its export crates are IPPC and ISPM-15 certified, and it is a member in good standing of the Colorado Motor Carriers Association. About half the work comes from homeowners with a single item that matters, and the other half from van lines, movers, freight forwarders and contractors who subcontract crating and specialty services. Free quotes are typically returned within one business day, and same-day emergency service is available. The office is open Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM.

FAQs
Is Specialized Moving Services a moving company?
No. The company states plainly that it is not a moving company. It builds custom crates and handles the specialty items and jobs that ordinary movers leave behind, including fine art, pool tables, home gym equipment, grandfather clocks, machinery and TV mounting. Van lines and movers regularly subcontract this work to the SMS crews.
Do you build the crate at my location or at your shop?
Both options are offered. For items that are fragile, oversized, heavy or difficult to transport unprotected, the crew brings tools and materials and builds the crate around the item at your home, warehouse, gallery or job site. If the item can travel safely, you can bring it to the facility at 2021 W. Bates Avenue in Englewood and the crate is built there. Call and the team will help you decide which option fits.
How do I get a quote and how long does it take?
Tell the team what you are protecting through the quote request on the website or by phone at (303) 762-1694. Quotes are free and typically come back within one business day. Same-day emergency service is available when a job cannot wait.
Can you build crates that clear international customs?
Yes. Export crating is IPPC and ISPM-15 certified, using heat-treated wood that carries the bug stamp international customs requires. This service is built for freight forwarders and exporters shipping equipment, machinery and other goods overseas.
Who actually does the work on my items?
Trained, background-checked SMS technicians, not temporary labor hired for the day. The crews build crates, crate fine art, handle specialty items and mount TVs week in and week out, so they know which wall of a crate takes the load and which item needs a crate instead of a box.
Are you insured, and can you provide a certificate?
The company is fully insured, and certificates of insurance are available on request for commercial partners. It is also a member in good standing of the Colorado Motor Carriers Association.
What kinds of commercial and trade partner work do you handle?
Roughly half the work ships under other companies' names for van lines, movers, freight forwarders and contractors. Commercial services include industrial machinery and equipment crating built on your plant floor, export crating, vapor barrier packaging, custom skids and pallets, container loading with blocking and bracing, and claims inspection and documentation.
